WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE

Reliving the old days through new software
In the early 1990s, Claus Giloi wrote a Windows software emulation of the front panel of the Altair 8800b and the IMSAI 8080 computers. It emulates the 8080 CPU, the lights and toggles, right down to the power switch. It rans on Windows 95 and WinNT.  The original executables and sample screen shots were once at http://www.nwlink.com/~tigger/altair.html but have since disappeared.

With the permission of author Claus Giloi, here is a 31K PkZip containing the C source, bitmaps, resources, and a Visual C 4.1 makefile. Claus would like to retain the copyright but allow redistribution of the source code with the hopes that the emulator will be enhanced. For example, the emulation of the CPU could be verified. There are many other 8080 or Z-80 emulator sources out there, but this emulation is unique in its ability to single-step and emulate the LEDs.

As of 2000, Richard Cini's Altair32 emulator project at  http://highgate.comm.sfu.ca/~rcini/classiccmp/Altair32.htm is doing a great job of enhancing the Giloi emulator.  If you have software (on paper, paper tape or whatever) that might be fun to run on the emulator, please pass it along to Richard.
